How Disney is trying to sell us witches merchandise that is Anti-Feminist, Zionist and ultimately how you should put your Money where your Mouth is.
in 2024 Disney Marvel Television released Agatha All Along, a 9 episode TV series supposedly centered around the Villain turned Anti Hero from Wandavision: Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn.
I already made a video essay back in October 2024 explaining the monumental issues around a TV series that tries to sell itself as feminist and for witches when all it does is serve capitalism (everything is merchandise, including the witches’ road song they wanted you to use in your TikTok and Instagram reels to promote their tv series), promoting a patriarchal redemption arch for a witch who can only be saved, like all women under patriarchy, by her only redeeming useful quality to patriarchy which is motherhood, and indeed how every penny that goes to Disney, whether through merch or Disney plus subscriptions, is blood money, given Disney’s openly Zionist stance.
Since a lot of the witchcraft community fell hook like and sinker for this excuse of a feminist patina show that again, sells us back only what the patriarchal capitalist status quo wants us to internalise, covered with a veneer of representation (femme, queer, people of colour) when the ultimate message is “protect the white cis boy whose power killed women, but who cares, he needs protection”, and the only way the evil witch can be redeemed is by sacrificing herself (Agatha literally dies to save Teen’s life) and existing now as a ghost, to guide and protect the cis white boy, and in order to do so, she had to lose not only her life but also her powers.
If you had any doubt that the Disney Marvel Propaganda machine will always teach you to follow the status quo and protect cis white boys only, well, this video coming Sunday should point out enough issues as to why, the veneer of the random trans flag in the background? the queer baiting of Agatha and Rio that turns into “bury your gays” trope at their first on camera kiss?
Also, we’re going to discuss the problematic issue that it is for witchy content creators to have taken Disney Blood Money to promote this show, from my humble point of view as a content creator of 15 years who, at some point, did youtube as their day job. And trust me: the big sponsorship money will not make your job more stable, it will only remind people that given the choice, you will follow capitalist self interest. so yeah, some creators ethics insight from my personal experience spending almost two decades in this carousel.
also, take note of how a content creator can be ethical by seeing the example set by Kelly-Ann Maddox Maddox just a few months ago, where she literally asked people to boycott her own books because her publisher is involved in supporting the Palestinian Genocide. Ethics don’t have to be optional.
